Maldives is home to one of the most prominent waters. Poseidon might have it to some of the most gorgeous ridges, textures and colors a long time ago. But with his trident came the ferocious waves crashing the shores of the blissful islands. And hence, the surf bug is born. Maldives is truly gifted with some of the most beautiful and elegant marine biospheres on the planet.

There are a few dozen surf points in the Maldives that are thought to be some of the best in the world. Maldivian waves are unique in its spectrum as the swells are usually pretty small compared to most countries. But this is more than made up for by the pure velocity of the wave. It is also one of the clearest waters sometimes offering 40 meters of visibility.

There are a couple of resorts like Adaaran Hudhuranfushi, Anantara Dhigu and a dozen others that specialize in catering to the surfing market. If you want to have a surfing adventure on a shoestring, there are a couple of surf shacks that will accommodate everything you need. Cokes (Male’ Atoll)

Cokes is very high in demand as it is very close to the capital city of the Maldives. Just a short 30-minute speedboat ride away, this wave is never disappointing. It’s a right-hander and it can be enjoyed by any surfer who is above intermediate as the waves are consistently at medium velocity. This hollow and barreling swell was experienced by some of the most prominent surfers such as Bethany Hamilton. The biggest drawback is the crowds that it attracts due to its close proximity with the capital city. For some of the best experiences surfers have the opportunity to hang loose with fellow surfers at Surf Shack in Thulusdhoo.

Chickens (North Male’ Atoll)

Located in the uninhabited island of Kuda Villingili, Chickens is one the best fast left swells in the Maldives offering some of the strongest waves. The locals near the island are very friendly and are always on the lookout to extend their hands to the foreigners. There are usually little to no crowds. The point can be most enjoyed by experts as the swell is usually pretty fast paced and the break is generally very advanced.

Pasta Point

Definitely one of the most significant swells relished by both locals and tourists for its long tubing wall and the fact that it is least bit affected by wind. Near the local island of Thulusdhoo that offers a lot of budget accommodation for surfers such as Season’s Paradise. It is one of the favorite surf points of Tony Hussein who was the Australian born Maldives surfer who introduced the sport to the locals of Maldives.

Sultans

Hosted by the uninhabited island of Thanburudhoo the Sultans are another conspicuous surf point along with its neighboring sister, the Honkies. Both of them are equally excellent so it is a pretty safe bet for surfers to make being pretty close to the capital city and accessible by speedboat. There is a saying in the Maldives that goes “If you are ever in god’s land don’t leave without riding the eaves of Jailbreaks, Honky’s and the Sultans.

Whether you are a beginner surfer or a world class athlete in the field, the Maldives is a swell you have to tick off your bucket list.
